The total cases stand at 1,006, according to the report released on Monday by South Delhi Municipal Corporation, the nodal agency for vectorborne diseases. Of these, 665 cases have been registered this month (till October 23). The figure this year is the highest since 2018 for the same period (till October) and is likely to overtake last year’s overall count, which stood at 1,072. Considering the surge, the Delhi government has reduced the number of beds reserved for Covid patients. “T he number of beds reserved for Covid patients in private hospitals has been reduced from 30 per cent to 10 per cent. The number of Covid beds in LNJP Hospital has been reduced from 700 to 400 while in AGSS Hospital it has been decreased from 600 to 350. These additional beds will be used for treatment of vector-borne diseases,” said a Delhi government official. Hospitals have started to feel the pressure, though they claimed to be prepared to convert Covid beds for dengue cases if the patient load increases. NO. Justices D Y Chandrachud and B V Nagarathna took the assurance by Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj into account and noted that students will face problems if the NEET PG counselling process went ahead as scheduled. The counselling process was supposed to start on October 25 as per the original schedule. Senior advocate Arvind Dattar, appearing for some NEET candidates, said that if the counselling process began as planned, by the time the top court’s decision on the reservation issue comes, the current admission process would already be over and students tients of vector-borne diseases,” said Dr Prem Singh Nayyar, Medical Superintendent, Sanjay Gandhi hospital. Dr Suresh Kumar, Medical Director, LNJP Hospital, said, “On a single day we are wit- nessing around five-six patients being admitted, but there are enough beds.” “Of the total daily turnout in OPD, around 25-30 per cent is fever cases of which 15-20% are turning out to be dengue. But, we don’t have as a bed crisis,” said Dr Suman Kumari, MS, Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital. However, considering the festive season and unpredictability of the virus, some hospitals are easing Covid precautions. Dr Rajesh Rautela, Medical Director, GTB Hospital, said the facility is not converting Covid beds. “We have sufficient beds…dengue patients are taken in normal beds,” he added. Didi’s dole for women drains Bengal’s coffers, affects infra projects P R A N A B M O N D A L @ Kolkata THE Mamata Banerjee government’s monthly dole for women has resulted in a cash crunch that is set to hit infrastructure projects in West Bengal. Many projects, which have been submitted or are to be submitted for administrative approval, are likely to face a roadblock as the state government’s coffers are stretched, apparently because of Lakshmir Bhandar scheme for homemakers. The scheme, which will be implemented from October-end, requires `18,000 crore annually It is one of Mamata’s pre. poll promises and is believed to have paid her huge dividends in the assembly election earlier this year. In Bengal, women constitute 49 per cent of total voters. The Trinamool Congress returned to power for a third term riding on massive support of women. Sources in the state adminis- tration said projects worth about `8,000 crore were already pending for administrative approval and more were supposed to be sent for the government’s nod. However, the government has asked the public works department (PWD) to assess the necessity of all such projects. “All the PWD engineers have been asked to submit reports mentioning why the projects are a necessity The pro. posed projects include replacement of 45-50 bridges and construction of roads,” said a government official. “A detour of a few km because of a broken road/ bridge creates a negative impression against the administration, but the government has realised that it is far less than the positive impact of monthly amount that will be credited to homemakers’ bank accounts,” said the official. A PWD official said the decision was linked to the finance department’s austerity drive. ede’s suspensions,” said Gyaneshwar Singh. BILLION DOLLAR CLUB CVC Capitals, RPSG spring a surprise; Adanis, Manchester United owners nudged out V E N K ATA K R I S H N A B @ Chennai AFTER technical valuations, as the BCCI opened the bids to reveal the owners of the two new IPL owners, they were in for a huge surprise. According to sources involved, it got to a point where even the BCCI office-bearers’ jaws dropped when they opened the sealed envelopes in Dubai Monday . Each bid outweighed the other. In a bidding process where Adanis were expected to win comfortably and Glazers (Manchester United owners), All Cargo Logistics and Kotak group were involved, RPSG Ventures Ltd, a company headquartered in Kolkata, sprung the biggest surprise. Their bid for Lucknow was astonishingly high — `7,090 crore ($940mn). RPSG Ventures are not new to IPL. They owned the now defunct Pune franchise. The CVC Capital Partners, headquartered in Luxembourg, was the other surprise. It outbid Adanis and will now own the Ahmedabad team. Their offer stood at `5,625 crore ($750 mn). The combined figure is `12,715 crore ($1.6bn) To put the values in perspective, when the IPL began in 2008, Mumbai Indians were the costliest franchise at $111.9 mn (`840 crore at current dollar rate). The huge sums that were tabled — the lowest being the `4,023.99 crore by Glazers — is CVC Capital Partners According to its website, it’s a $125 bn (`1 lakh crore) private equity and credit firm that manages funds on behalf of 300 investors from North America, Europe, Asia and Middle East. Though 22 entities had picked the documents, only nine bidders were shortlisted after technical clearance in a meeting held in Dubai. It is understood the BCCI was expecting around `8,000 cr from the bids. Like other major leagues across the globe, TV broadcast rights are the major contributor to the IPL’s coffers. Currently, the BCCI gets around `58 crore per match from broadcast rights. Taking this as an indicator, the broadcast rights that is up for renewal is expected fetch around `36,000 crore for 2023-27 period. “The level of interest among the interested parties prove that IPL is among the most soughtafter sporting leagues in the world. We had bids from different parts of the world and from parties with diverse portfolios wanting to make a foray into the world of sports,” said IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel.
