E X P R E SS N E WS S E R V I C E @ New Delhi Nov 7 T O D AY more than 60 daily Covid cases, positivity rising too Nov 6 IN THE NEWS ONE of the two drugs showing promising results in treating Covid-19 globally in the early stages of infections and arresting its progress, is set to hit the Indian market soon. It could cost as low as `500-1000 for a five-day treatment course. Among the companies licensed to make the drug in India, Sun Pharma, had said on Thursday that the firm will launch the antiviral drug under the brand name Molxvir at an “economical price.” The drug’s launch in India could come after the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency recently granted emergency use authorisation to molnupriravir — developed by Merck and Ridgeback — for treating mild and moderate Covid-19 cases. The US Food and Drug Authority is also in the process of reviewing its data. Sources in the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation in India told this newspaper that the regulator could give its verdict on the restricted emergency use of the medicine as early as this week. It is in the final stage of reviewing data from 700 patients in India. “This could pave the way for the launch of the oral Covid-19 pill in the coming weeks,” said a senior official. Officials in the department of science and technology said that mostly the , drug will be priced at around `25-50 per tablet and a patient will need to take about 15-20 tablets over five days. “We are hoping that for every patient, a course of this drug may cost only about `500-1000 which will be very affordable,” said a high ranking official. As per molnupiravir Phase 3 clinical data from several countries, this oral broad spectrum antiviral drug is capable of clearing SARS CoV 2 infection from infected patients in five days and prevent the disease from progressing to a severe stage. This drug is particularly for those with laboratory confirmed Covid infection and at least one risk factor which may be obesity age over 60, diabetes , or cardiovascular diseases. In India, eight companies including Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Natco, Hetero Pharma, Aurbindo Pharma and few others had entered into voluntary licensing agreements to produce generic versions of this drug. *462 437 428 390 404 372 414 **471 S U M I S U K A N YA D U T TA @ New Delhi major air bases for landing on the expressway airstrip. Borders of 15 metres each have been made on both sides of the strip. Vehicles on the runway have been completely banned. Service lanes are being built on both sides of the strip. There are plans to extend the length of the expressway from 341 kms to 354 kms, up to Ballia. INDIA’S industrial production growth slowed down to 3% in September, a seven-month low, on account of chip shortage, coal mining disruption, and normalisation of base effect, as per data from the National Statistical Office on Friday . Manufacturing sector’s output surged 2.7% in September, mining output grew 8.6% and power generation 0.9%. India’s industrial production, measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), had grown by 1% in September 2020. Despite the festive season, consumer durables output was 2% lower than a year ago, while consumer non-durables was down 0.5%. Experts found it a bit disappointing. “No doubt festival demand is finding reflection in the year-on-year growth but the consumption demand after Covid 1.0 & 2.0 still has not reached to the level that output could reach or surpass the pre-Covid period,” said Sunil Kumar Sinha, principal economist, India Ratings. Aditi Nayar, chief economist, ICRA, said supply side issues in the auto sector are still a dampener. “We expect the high base to keep the IIP growth lacklustre at under 2.5%” in October. Meanwhile retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, rose marginally in October to 4.48% due to an uptick in food and fuel prices.
