Cops in CBI net The CBI has arrested two Delhi Police personnel for allegedly taking bribe from a sub inspector accused of raping a woman constable, officials said on Sunday. The arrested personnel have been identified as sub inspector Romi Memroth and assistant sub inspector Lekhram. They were posted at the Malviya Nagar Police Station. According to police, the woman constable posted in south district had on August 3 lodged rape complaint against sub inspector Manoj who was posted in the same district. On Monday a Special Inves, tigation Team (SIT) led by DIG Upendra Agarwal will seek his police remand for further interrogation. Though Ashish kept insisting that he was not in the car that rammed into the protestors from behind, which led to the violence that killed eight persons, including farmers and a journalist, police authorities claimed they had evidence to show his presence at the spot. It was Ashish’s Mahindra Thar SUV that mowed into the farmers around 3 pm last Sun- day, when farmers were protesting against the visit of UP deputy chief minister Keshav Maurya to Lakhimpur Kheri. While Ashish ducked questions about his role in the ghastly incident, sources claimed he failed to provide satisfactory evidence about his whereabouts between 2.36 pm and 3.30 pm on that fateful Sunday . Ashish claimed he was attending a dangal (wrestling match) at his ancestral village Banbirpur at that time and furnished videos and affidavits of 10 people to corroborate his claim, but the SIT was not impressed. “I was not present at the site of incident,” was his standard response to most questions, adding: “I came to know about it later.” But when asked about the bullet cartridges the police found in his car that was burnt by the angry protestors at the violence site, he was evasive. He also did not provide satisfactory answers to questions on the licensed arms he was carrying and who all were with him, sources said. The name he mentioned was of Hari Om, who, he claimed was driving the SUV . SC SHOULD STRIKE DOWN SEDITION LAW & PORTIONS OF UAPA: NARIMAN EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ New Delhi URGING the Supreme Court to strike down offensive portions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA) and Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code that criminalises sedition, retired Supreme Court judge Rohinton Nariman on Sunday said the court should not leave it to the government to remove the offending laws and instead use its judicial power to do so. In July last, the Supreme Court had observed that the sedition law was being widely misused and wondered whether the colonial era law was at all necessary now. “I would exhort the Supreme Court to not send sedition law cases pending before it back to the Centre. Governments will come and go (but) it is important for the court to use its power and strike down Section 124A and offensive portion of UAPA. Then citizens here would breathe more freely Justice Nariman said at a .” function organised by the Viswanath Pasayat Memorial Committee. Justice Nariman pointed out that sedition was part of the original draft but not in the final version of the Indian Penal Code drawn up by Lord Thomas Babington Macaulay . It came into force in 1862. “Sedition provision was there in draft but not in the final book. But it was later discovered and re-drafted. It was said that this section was left out by oversight. The wordings were also vague. Sentence under 124A was enormous as it was transportation for life and imprisonment for three years,” he said, stressing that this law has a chilling effect on journalists as well. “Gandhiji said affection (towards government) cannot be measured by law. He said disaffection should be given full hand unless it leads to violence. He said he considered it a privilege to be charged under Section 124A,” the retired jurist asserted. Gandhiji was sentenced to 6 years and he served 2 years. Jawaharlal Nehru too served years in 1932 and 1934 for sedition, Nariman added. Another freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak was tried for sedition on more than one occasion, he asserted. to this crisis. Union coal minister Pralhad Joshi took to Twitter to allay fears, saying Coal India Limited has stocks of 43 million tonnes, which are sufficient to meet 24 days of demand. “We take pride that domestic coal supply has risen to substitute imported coal in the country. Furthering the vision of AatmanirbharBharat, domestic coal-based power generation has increased by 24% in the 1st half of this fiscal and imported coal supply has reduced by 30%,” he tweeted. “Reviewed coal production and supply situation. Assuring everyone that there is absolutely no threat of disruption in power supply. There is sufficient coal stock of 43 million tonnes equivalent to 24-day demand.” Earlier, Sisodia slammed Union power minister R K Singh for dismissing reports of coal crisis even as Punjab utility PSPCL continued operating plants at 50% capacity and announced a minimum threehour daily power cut till October 13. The shortage affected power generation in many states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh. For its part, the coal ministry said an extended spell of rains had affected movement and temporary shortfalls were not indicative of crisis as rolling stocks got replenished daily . Lone woman Muslim artist Huma is elated at performing twin roles, “Artists have no religion and playing the roles at Patthar Chhati Ramlila is extra special.
