Speaking to a Marathi news portal, Pawar said that once upon a time, Congress used to rule the regions from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, but that’s not the situation now. When it comes to leadership issue, Congress leaders are very sensitive and are not even open to any suggestions, he added. Taking a dig at the grand old party, the NCP supremo said there was a story in Uttar Pradesh which said a zamindar (landlord) used to own vast tracts of land and a haveli (mansion). “But the land ceiling act came and there was a limitation to owning land. Then gradually the land of the landlord was reduced to a few acres. But when he wakes up in the morning at his mansion, he says he owns all the land. The reality is, he used to own it in the past and not today. These days, he even struggles to repair his mansion,” Pawar said. Responding to the jibe, Maharashtra Cong ress chief Nana Patole said leaders entrusted with power by the Congress betrayed it. “The Congress was never a party of zamindars...Congress gave its land to several leaders for upkeep but they stole it over the years,” Patole added. Former chief minister and BJP MLA Devendra Fadnavis said Pawar had rightly described the present condition of the Congress. He said the party had lost everything due to its arrogance, but still behaved as if it owns everything. The NCP chief has often been critical of Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. He did not attend the breakfast meeting of Opposition leaders called by the Congress scion in New Delhi recently and sent his daughter Supriya Sule instead, though he attended a dinner meeting called by estranged Congress leader Kapil Sibal. Both the portals have run several stories highly critical of the government. While officials said these were ‘surveys’ and not raids, mobile phones of employees were reportedly seized and none was allowed to leave the premises during the survey . “The survey is related to tax returns and remittances they get from the overseas,” an I-T official told TMS, refusing to divulge more details. People aware of the searches said I-T officials had visited the Newslaundry office last month to serve summons, after which the firm submitted the papers. Similar searches were conducted on the premises of digital media platform NewsClick. In February this year, the Enforcement Directorate had raided the NewsClick office as well as the homes of its editors to probe suspicion of money laundering. The raid attracted criticism from journalists, who called it an attempt to gag independent media. NewsClick approached the Delhi High Court and was granted interim relief. Earlier in July the I-T depart, ment had raided the offices of Dainik Bhaskar and Lucknowbased Bharat Samachar television channel. Both the media outlets had criticised the Centre’s mismanagement of the second Covid wave. In a separate operation, the Income Tax Department said it has raided Ahmedabad-based media and real estate group Sambhaav and detected “unaccounted” transactions of over `1,000 crore.
